Sometimes, to get rid or to stop people from talking to me, I would pretend that I am not a Singaporean and cannot understand English. For all the cases I encountered so far, everyone left me alone. For today, I was at VCH talking pictures of the lovely building for my assignment when a guy approached me>.> He asked me if I wanted him to use my Canon 5D to take a picture of me and the building. Well besides the fact that the 5D costs well over 3000SGD, I had the privilege of using a stigma lens which cost around 500+SGD. So who in the right mind will let a complete stranger hold my camera...
In the end, he got the idea that I was not local and that my English sucks. So he asked me which country I was from. Out of the many languages and countries I know, I chose Japanese as I was most comfortable with it. Big mistake. That guy started speaking to me in fluent Japanese because apparently his boss is a Japanese....
So I was like O.O Kill me now.
Yet, since I was a direction idiot and someone is offering me to be my tour guide for the day to take pictures of the buildings I need, why not(: I played along(:
So for today, I became Sakura Kiyora. A Japanese photo journalist in her late twenties who has a passion and obsession for buildings and architectures. Hailing from Tokyo, she is a typical Japanese who is visiting Singapore for the 2nd time in her entire life and finds the weather really hot and humid. She studied in New York for 5 years and loves history. A lot.
From VCH, he was like since you like buildings so much, we moved on to the parliament court. Or the supreme court. Then to Clarke quay's building with the colorful window. As we moved around Singapore, he talked A LOT. He was like explaining about the shop houses and stuff to me non stop. Even when I tried to get rid of him, he was like it alright I got time. No worries...
Finally, when we were near Liang court, he even suggested me to go to China town O.o So that was when I got a 'call' from my 'friend' who told me to meet him at Liang court. Sad to say that there is no distress button I can press on my phone ever since I left the house:( On the way to Liang court, he said 'I am really free today so I am a tour guide today. So can you give me 20 dollars for my dinner? You can check your wallet and give me 20 dollars.' DUM DUM DUM.... I knew it... I swear there are no kind souls in Singapore who does things like that for free. The scariest part is from his eyes, I know that he means it... And if I don't do anything, he would turn crazy>.< Thank god I know psychology>.< So in the end, I gave 7 dollars to him and got rid of him>.> Went to atsuki for refuge for a little while before I went off again to take pictures.
Well I guess it was a 7 dollars well spent cause I got my images and I did not get lost in the CDB area saving a lot of my time. But its just those eyes that freaked me out. The sad part is I could not go down to the alley bar as I had no budget and Mag did not answer my sms:( So no alcohol for me today:(
Lesson I took back from today's epic tour around Singapore is that next time, I am a Spanish not a Japanese.
